Five Black Bears Named to Hockey East All-Academic Squad
ORONO, Maine-- Five members of the University of Maine men's ice hockey
team were among 40 players named to the Hockey East All-Academic team
released Friday, June 13.
Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and Gray Shaneberger
(Sewell, N.J.) were each named Distinguished Scholars, receiving Hockey
East All-Academic honors each of the last four years. The pair were two
of the four student-athletes receiving Distinguished Scholar accolades
among the nine schools.
Junior Todd Jackson (Cortland, N.Y.) received honors for the third
year. Frank Doyle (Guelph, Ontario) was named to the Academic All-Star
Team, which honors the top GPA's by position, in addition to being
named to the All-Academic Team. Doyle had the highest grade point
average among Hockey East goaltenders. Freshman Steve Mullin
(Cartwright, Manitoba) received honors for the first time.
To be eligible for the Hockey Eats All-Academic team, an individual
must post a 3.0 grade point average or higher in each of the two
academic periods during which his team was actively competing.
