WILDCATS WIN IN WILD WILD WEST
UNH bests top competition to triumph in Ice Breaker Cup

WAKEFIELD, MA - In a stirring start to the 2000-01 college hockey season,
the New Hampshire Wildcats upset top-ranked North Dakota en route to winning
the fourth annual Ice Breaker Cup at the University of Michigan.

Hobey Baker candidate Ty Conklin was the hero of the 'Cats opening round win
over the defending NCAA champions, amassing 39 saves and stopping all seven
North Dakota shots in the shootout tiebreaker. Garrett Stafford, a sophomore
defenseman was the only scorer for UNH in the shootout, solving goaltender
Karl Goehring with a backhand deke. That allowed the Wildcats to advance to
the title game against Colgate, who ousted No. 2 ranked Michigan in similar
fashion.

Colgate's Red Raiders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the New Hampshire
squad responded with seven unanswered goals and clinched the game and the
Cup by a 7-3 final. Junior sniper Darren Haydar scored twice in the second
period and set up teammate Lanny Gare's game-winning goal early in the
third. Haydar finished the tournament with five points and has been named
Hockey East's Player of the Week. Conklin is honored as the Defensive Player
of the Week after adding 15 saves to his total in the title game win.

In other action, new UMass Amherst head coach Don Cahoon impressed observers
by steering an offensive explosion in his debut, even though the Minutemen
fell by a 9-6 final at Wisconsin. Sophomore forward Jeff Turner spearheaded
the attack with five points on UMass Amherst's six goals, but the Badgers
stopped Turner and crew with a 3-0 win in Saturday's rematch.

Hockey East teams combined to score 41 goals in six exhibition games this
weekend, collecting five wins against their Canadian counterparts.

Next weekend, regular season action heats up as Maine opens its schedule by
hosting North Dakota for a two-game set. Merrimack will be travelling to the
other side of the country for games against premier opponents Michigan and
Michigan State in the Nissan Tournament at Alaska-Anchorage. Boston
University and Northeastern look to carry the banner for Hockey East with
home games against ECAC rivals RPI and St. Lawrence, respectively.
