#5 St. Cloud State Sweeps #4 Minnesota, 5-2

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The #5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team
(27-8-1, 20-8-0 WCHA) clinched second place outright in the WCHA on March 3,
thanks to a big 5-2 win in St. Cloud. The Huskies' second place WCHA ending
is the best conference finish since SCSU joined the league in 1990-91.
Minnesota ends in third plavce with a 25-10-2, 18-8-2 WCHA record.

The Huskies charged to a quick 1-0 lead in the game as Tyler Arnason posted
his team-leading 24th goal of the season at 8:00 of the first with assists
from Duvie Westcott and Ryan LaMere. Mark Hartigan boosted the score to 2-0
with a tally at 11:54.

In the second stanza, Westcott gained the game winner with his ninth goal of
the season at 8:20 on the power play. Hartigan and Brandon Sampair set the
play, with Sampair gaining a team record 34th assist of the season. The old
record of 33 assists was set by Jeff Saterdalen in 1989-90.

UM got on the board at 15:50 in the second with a goal by John Pohl. In the
third period, Westcott iced the game with a shorthanded goal at 4:14 with
assists from Sampair and Arnason. Motzko charted his 14th goal of the
season at 6:06 of the third before UM ended the game with a goal by Matt
DeMarchi at 16:27.

SCSU goalie Scott Meyer put in a strong bid for post-season honors with
another outstanding effort in the crease. He charted an impressive 36 saves
in the game, while the Gophers once again outshot the Huskies 38-30. Adam
Hauser was the keeper of record for UM with 25 saves. Of note, the vaunted
UM power play (best in the nation coming into the game) was held scoreless
over the weekend. SCSU was 1-of-5 on the power play, while UM went 0-of-9.
Over the weekend, UM was 0-of-15 on the power play.

The Huskies will continue their season on March 9 with a first-round WCHA
playoff home game against UA-Anchorage. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at the
National Hockey Center. The second game of the series is slated for March
10. The third game, if needed, will be on March 11.
