The Nanooks took an early 2-0 lead on a power play goal on a rebound knocked
in by Jim Lawrence at 6:21 and a goal by freshman Cory Rask at 11:10. Rask
caught a puck in front of the net, dropped it and put it past the Bronco
goaltender. David Gove of Western Michigan scored at 12:44 and then on a
power play at 15:23 to the tie the score at 2-2. Lawrence netted his second
power play goal at 16:06 for the lead but David Bishai tied it at 3-3 at the
17:44 mark of the 1st period. Neither team scored in the second period.
Ryan Crane gave the Broncos a 4-3 lead at 10:59 of the third period. It was
kind of a strange goal because it appeared that Mayes had blocked a previous
shot over his net and into the netting behind the boards, but the puck came
back out front and Crane skated it in and ripped it past Mayes. UAF
freshman Tom Herman scored on a backhander through Reynaert's five-hole at
17:37 to tie the game at 4-4 and eventually send the game into overtime.
The Broncos let him skate in alone on Reynaert and he put the puck through
the opening. The Nanooks had some terrific opportunities to score in
overtime and really put the pressure on offensively, but the Broncos were
able to hold on for the tie after looking like they were going to get a win
pretty late in the third period.
