I can agree with your opinion.  The point I was making, and I think it was
made by a couple of others commenting on this thread, is that some teams
have players with the necessary skills to take advantage of a large ice
surface, some don't.  Further more, I think that the majority don't.  I think
you can see this when you watch a game between two such teams on a
large ice surface.  The play tends to be noticably slower than normal.  A
game between two teams with these skilled players is MUCH more
entertaining on the large surface where there talents really come through.
 
You do make a great point, though.  A team that is better on a small surface
is probably also better at the "clutch and grab" brand of hockey.  But for
those who like a hard hitting affare :-), smaller surfaces may give you
your best value for the dollar!

I have the exact opposite feeling as do you.  That is, the larger ice sheet
makes
for a faster game (more passing, better skating) as it "opens up" the game.
"Clutch and grab" hockey is easier to play on the smaller sheets of ice.
 
Just my useless opinion ...
