MAINE AND PRINCETON SKATE TO 4-4 TIE
The Maine women's hockey team battled to a 4-4 tie with Princeton University
Friday night at Alfond Arena. After Princeton took a 4-3 lead into the third
period, Maine's Nicole Munro stole the puck at her own blue line, skated the
length of the ice, and slipped a short-handed goal past PU goalie Sarah
Ahlquist with the Black Bears two skaters down.
Princeton's April Brown opened the scoring at 6:17 of the first, before
Maine began the second period with goals by Karen Droog, Kelly Nelson, and
Meagan Aarts in the period's first 3:31. Maine made some costly turnovers in
the defensive zone, however, as the Tigers answered with three straight
goals of their own. Susan Hobson tallied twice and Gretchen Anderson scored
unassisted as Princeton took its 4-3 lead into the third frame. Munro tied
the game at the 5:25 mark of the third, and neither team managed to score
afterward. Hobson, Anderson, and Lisa Rasmussen each had two points for
13-6-3 Princeton, while Munro finished with three points, Aarts with two,
and Droog with two for 14-12-3 Maine.
Maine outshot Princeton 30-18, including 2-0 in overtime. Ahlquist made 26
saves as her record moved to 5-3-3, while Maine's Dawn Froats stopped 14
shots to go to 7-4-1 on the season.
Maine and Princeton meet again tomorrow afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. start at
Alfond Arena in Orono.
