This collection of stories about historical legal figures has been a
"labor of love" for Herb Silsby. As Alan Baker, publisher of the
Ellsworth American, says in his foreword to this volume, Justice Silsby
has been Maine's Historian in Residence for over 50 years. Herb profiles
such legendary characters as Chief Justice John A. Peters, one of the
most popular Supreme Court Justices in Maine, and Clara Nash, the first
woman admitted to the bar in New England. Included in the book are
Silsby's memorials to Maine's seven forgotten Supreme Court Justices.

During his lengthy legal career, Judge Silsby was a second-generation
Superior Court Justice and past President of the Maine Bar Association.
For 8 years, we enjoyed his "Looking Backward" column in the Ellsworth
American, which highlighted historical persons, places, and things in
Downeast Maine. He was born in Aurora from a long line of Silsbys and
grew up in Ellsworth, where he has made his home since his high school
years. Herb Silsby is know throughout Maine and New England for his
historical and oftentimes witty writings.
