The Maine Library Commission is seeking a visionary, experienced and innovative leader for the position of State Librarian. The State Librarian leads the operations of the Maine State Library and serves as an advocate for all libraries in Maine. The future of libraries is evolving constantly, with new models, consortia and technology, and the State Librarian can have a far-reaching impact on ensuring the highest quality and most equitable library services for all Mainers.  
Maine libraries have led the way with many ?firsts? and we are seeking a candidate to continue this trend!

The State Librarian reports to the Maine Library Commission, and has responsibility for a $5.2 million operating budget and 45 FTEs, oversees state grants and federal aid to libraries and works with the University of Maine System to oversee Maine InfoNet, the state?s digital library.

The Maine State Library and the wider Maine library community and environment are both progressive and accomplished, and the State Librarian will be responsible for continuing to lead the way forward with a dynamic vision and ability to implement change. The State Librarian recommends legislation for the Library Commission to present to the State Legislature, as well as regulations to govern the operation of State-aided library programs and policies to move library services to higher levels.

The Maine State Library is located in Augusta, Maine?s capital, and has two divisions: Reader and Information Services and Library Development.  The Reader and Information Services Division provides for the delivery of quality information, reference and loan services to state agency personnel and the general public, and the Library Development Division provides for the development of all types of libraries throughout the state. This division provides leadership and technical assistance to Maine?s public, school, academic and special libraries, located in rural and urban settings alike.

Required Qualifications:

MLS and post degree professional experience such as a director of a major library system; director of a comprehensive university or research library; or in a management position in a state library agency or large public library

Demonstrated vision and proven leadership qualities, as well as ability to manage programs, staff, technology, and budgets

Have the ability to provide effective policy for library services in a geographically large state with many independent libraries, a rapidly changing electronic and digital environment, and a history of cooperative venture

Have excellent oral and written communication skills for interpersonal, presentation, negotiation, and consensus-building duties

Proven track record of ability to work with all types of libraries, cultural agencies and interest groups.



Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with state and federal government

Experience working with legislative initiatives

Understanding of the information needs of both rural and urban environments

Candidate(s) who have been active nationally

Have and be able to communicate a vision for library services for the future and have a collaborative leadership style.

This is a fiscal-year, full-time position with an excellent benefits package. The annual salary range for this position is $64,209 to $92,497. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
