School library staff – your input is needed! If you haven’t already done so, please complete the AASL School Libraries Count! Survey which closes on Friday, May 14th. The survey can be accessed directly at www.aaslsurvey.org <http://www.aaslsurvey.org> . You can also access a ‘tip sheet’ to collect the data needed prior to accessing the survey at http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/aasl/researchandstatistics/slcsurvey/SLCTips.pdf. If you have your data ahead of time the survey should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete.

A few Q&A that have come in this past week:

Q. I work in multiple libraries so how would I submit one survey?

A. The survey is for the library, not the individual librarian, and so for instance, if one librarian covers 2 libraries they would look up each school in the survey and enter their data. When entering the information for hours worked this will indicate the percentage of a school librarian that is staffing the library.

Q. My school is not listed when I look up by zip code (or there has been a change in the location/name of my school), how do I enter?
A. To enter your school name/address information take the following steps, on the first screen enter your zip code and click the “Look Up School” button, on the next page there will be a link entitled “Other school not listed above,” click on this link and you will be taken to a screen in which you can enter your correct school information.

(Note, the reason for a discrepancy is due to the fact that school information is imported from the NCES database and often times there is a lag between when a school is added or changed. In addition independent schools are not required to have an NCES identification number and therefore are often not included in the database.)

Q. I’m unable to access my 2009 SLC Survey?
A. Your user name is the school’s NCES number and pass code is ‘slcpass.’ If you participated in the 2009 survey and don’t know your NCES number contact Allison Cline at AASL ([log in to unmask]) and your number can be sent to you. If you are unsure whether or not you participated in 2009 you can also contact Allison Cline to confirm whether or not your data is available.

Q. When will I be able to access my 2010 survey report?
A. AASL will be releasing the 2010 results in the fall 2010. If you submit your email address when finishing the survey you will receive a notice when the reports are available. Note, your email address will only be used in communications related to the AASL School Libraries Count! survey.
