A couple list members are named in this article which appeared on

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was
honored on Friday, May 6 at the annual Friends of Maine Hockey Awards
Banquet. The team paid tribute to the senior class and awards were
presented. Junior Jimmy Howard was named the recipient of the Harold
Alfond Most Valuable Player Award and the co-recipient of the Shawn
Walsh Defensive Player Award along with junior defenseman Steve Mullin.


Howard (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) was 19-13-7 on the season and increased his
team-record to fifteen shutouts. He had a 1.92 goals against average
and a .924 save percentage as he continues to make his mark on the
Black Bear record book. Mullin (Cartwright, Manitoba) started all 40
games this season on the blueline which contributed to Maine posting
the forth-best defense in the nation. Mullin was also the recipient of
the Ocean Properties Unsung Hero Award. Bret Tyler (Maynard, Mass.) was
named the Howard Neville Rookie of the Year following a season where he
was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie team and led Maine defensemen
with 20 points. Josh Soares (Hamliton, Ontario) was named the Jack
Semler Most Improved Player, as he had 12 goals and 23 total points on
the season.

John Ronan (South Boston, Mass.) was awarded the Stein Award, which
recognizes the player who brings the team to the proper emotional level
for a game. Ronan is currently playing with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL
and was not present for the banquet.The Coca-Cola Three Star Award was
given to Jimmy Howard (Ogdensburg, N.Y.). Brent Shepheard (Shawnigan
Lake, British Columbia) was the recipient of the Dale Lick Academic
Achievement Award. Jason Guerrero of Northeastern University was named
the Most Honored Opponent. The Richard Britt Coaches Perseverance
Award, which recognizes the player who has persevered through some
difficult challenges to play at his best at the end of the season, was
given to Mathew Deschamps (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). Troy Barnes (Pembroke,
Ontario) was presented the Bruce Griffin Memorial Center Ice Club
Unsung Hero Award. Buffy Parker and Spiros Polemis were given the
Madeline Bacon Spirit Award for their devotion and support of Maine
hockey. Dave Wollstadt was presented the Friends of Maine Hockey
Volunteer of the Year Award.





The 2004-05 season will begin with the Icebreaker Tournament, hosted by
Colorado College, on October 7 and 8.
