SOUND TIGERS SIGN MARTIN KARIYA
(July 22) The American Hockey League's Bridgeport
Sound Tigers, the top affiliate of the Islanders, have
announced the signing of Martin Kariya, the brother of
Paul Kariya who recently signed with the NHL's
Colorado Avalanche and Steve Kariya, who finished the
2002-03 season with the AHL's Albany River Rats. All
three Kariya brothers played hockey at the University
of Maine while sister Noriko played field hockey for
the Black Bears.
Kariya, 21, posted 50 goals, 105 assists, 155 points
and 36 penalty minutes in 156 games during four
seasons, 1999-2003, at Maine. The North Vancouver,
British Columbia native was an assistant captain for
the Black Bears and led them in scoring with 14 goals,
36 assists and 50 points in 39 games during his senior
year last season. He also finished tied for sixth in
the National Collegiate Athletic Association in
assists and appeared in three Calder Cup Playoff games
with the AHL's Portland Pirates last season.
Kariya also led Maine with 24 assists and 36 points as
a sophomore in 2000-01 and led all Black Bear freshmen
with 17 assists and 25 points in 1999-2000.
