MAINE AND CORNELL SKATE TO 1-1 TIE

ITHACA, N.Y. (November 21) -- Goals within 10 seconds of each other knotted
the score at 1-all, as the Cornell men's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie
with No. 11 Maine this evening at Lynah Rink in front of a sellout crowd.
After two scoreless periods, Maine's Mike Mantenuto chipped in a shot past
Cornell junior goalie Matt Underhill at 10:50 in the third with assists
going to Chris Heisten and Doug Janik. Just 10 seconds later, Maine goalie
Mike Morrison chased the puck behind the net only to have the it take a
funny bounce out of the corner to junior Krzysztof Wieckowski, who found
senior Dan Svoboda sitting in front of the net to send it in.
The Big Red actually thought it had scored in the second period when a shot
seemed to escape Morrison and fall in behind him. The officials said the
whistle had been blown before the puck crossed the line and waived off the
apparent score.
It was a true defensive battle, with both sides working the puck down low
and taking away scoring chances. The Big Red also blocked 10 shots in the
contest, while Maine blocked 13.
The first period was fairly even with Cornell taking six shots on goal to
the Black Bears five. Maine turned it up a bit in the second with 12 shots
to the Big Red's eight, but the third period was when the Black Bears
established themselves, with 12 shots to Cornell's three.
In the overtime, the Big Red fired off two shots -- one from the point by
sophomore defenseman Doug Murray and another right at the doorstop from
sophomore center Matt McRae. Murray also had a shot blocked from up top.
Maine had one shot on goal when Matthias Trattnig fired the puck from the
right faceoff circle. Defenseman Doug Janik also fired a shot from the left
point, but it was blocked by Cornell.
Overall, Morrison stopped 19 shots for Maine, while junior goalie Matt
Underhill had 28 stops for the Big Red.
Maine returns to action this weekend with non-conference games at Brown on
Friday and Dartmouth on Saturday.
