Player blinded in
accident
Associated Press
ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland -- Jeff Libby, a defenseman
with
the Lowell Lock Monsters of the AHL, was rushed to a
hospital Saturday night after being cut on the eye by a
skate
during a 4-2 victory over the St. John's Maple Leafs.
Libby, 24, was trailing the play when the Maple Leafs'
Mark
Deyell was upended by a Lowell player. Deyell's skate
came
up and caught Libby in the eye area. Libby, bleeding
profusely, immediately left the ice.
"It's the most tragic thing I've seen here," said Maple
Leafs
team physician Dick Barter. "And it was a freaky play.
Absolutely freaky."
Barter said Libby was to undergo surgery late Saturday
night,
but the prognosis isn't good.
"We'll have to wait and see, but the chances of him
getting his
sight back are about 10 per cent," Barter said. "It's a
very bad
injury. The eyeball was cut."
Marcel Cousineau made 22 saves to earn his
league-leading
ninth victory of the season.
"It's not a pleasant thing to see when something like
this
happens, whether it's your teammate or not," Cousineau
said.
"All our prayers are with Jeff right now."
