UMaine Hockey Honors Team with Awards at Banquet

ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team handed out its
year-end awards at the annual banquet held Friday, May 17 at Jeff's Catering
in Brewer, Maine. Ten different Black Bears were honored for their
accomplishments this season in which Maine finished 26-11-7 and lost to
Minnesota in overtime in the National Championship game. The team also
honored its four seniors: Matt Yeats (Innisfail, Alberta), Peter Metcalf
(Pembroke, Mass.), Niko Dimitrakos (Somerville, Mass.) and Mike Morrison
(Medford, Mass.).

Dimitrakos won the Coca Cola Three-Star Award which recognizes outstanding
game performance by a particular player throughout the entire season.
Dimitrakos finished the season with 20 goals and 31 assists for 51 points.
Gray Shaneberger (Sewell, N.J.) won the Unsung Hero/Bruce Griffin Memorial
Award. The award honors a player who gives his all but whose name does not
always show up on the scoreboard or in the newspaper. Robert Liscak
(Skalica, Slovakia) won the Harold Westerman Coaches' Award, which
recognizes a player who does not necessarily excel in a single skill, but
constantly makes important contributions leading the team to success. The
award is selected by the coaching staff.

Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, British Columbia) received the Ocean
Properties Never-Give-Up Award. The award is presented to a player who
demonstrates a tenacious, never-quit attitude in preparation, practice and
game style as selected by the team. Chris Heisten (Anchorage, Alaska) earned
the Richard Britt Most Inspirational Player Award. The award is presented to
an individual who, by a variety of methods, involving conduct, spirit,
intensity, selflessness and sacrifice serves as an inspirational role model
establishing a sense of comfort and challenge for the team. For the second
year in a row, Lucas Lawson (Braeside, Ontario) earned the Stein Award,
which recognizes an individual who brings the team to the proper emotional
level for a game. Colin Shields (Glasgow, Scotland) garnered the Howard
Neville Rookie of the Year Award. Shields was named to the Hockey East
Rookie Team and finished his first season with 29 goals and 17 assists for
46 points, including 13 power play goals and six game-winners.

Kariya also earned the Dale Lick Academic Achievement Award, presented to
the student-athlete who has the highest grade point average on the team.
Netminder Mike Morrison garnered the Outstanding Defensive Player Award. The
senior finished the year with a 2.19 goals against average and a .921 save
percentage and was named to the Hockey East All-Conference First Team. Troy
Barnes (Pembroke, Ontario) picked up the Jack Semler Most Improved Player
Award. Barnes, freshman defenseman, played in just six of the first 11
games, but saw action in 21 of the last 22 games, missing just one with an
injury. Senior captain Peter Metcalf won the Harold Alfond Most Valuable
Player Award. The award is given to the player whose loss to the team
subsequently would have the most significant impact on the team.

Following the awards, underclassmen paid tribute to the seniors who led
UMaine to a record of 104-37-23 over the past four years and a National
Championship in 1999. Lucas Lawson honored Josh MacDonald, who has served as
the equipment manager for the past three seasons. Gray Shaneberger spoke
about Matt Yeats, Francis Nault (Tracy, Quebec) about Mike Morrison, Todd
Jackson (Cortland, N.Y.) about senior Niko Dimitrakos and Cliff Loya about
fellow defenseman Peter Metcalf.

At the end of the night it was announced that Chris Heisten will serve as
the captain of the 2002-03 Black Bears, while Robert Liscak and Martin
Kariya will serve as assistant captains.
