From today's Boston Globe:

Umile interviews for job at UMass
By Globe Staff and Wire Reports, Globe Correspondent, 3/29/2000

The University of Massachusetts's search for a men's hockey coach took a
surprising turn yesterday when athletic director Bob Marcum met with New
Hampshire coach Dick Umile.

They met for ''five or six hours'' in Amherst, according to Marcum. Now it
is up to Umile, who returned home last night to consider the opportunity.

''We were pleased that he would come and visit us about our job,'' Marcum
said. ''We think it's a great job and he's a great coach and [Umile's
visit] validates the kind of job we do have. He's at the top of anyone's
list.''

Coach Joe Mallen was fired after the Minutemen finished 11-20-5 and lost
to Boston University in the first round of the Hockey East playoffs.

UMass contacted Umile last Saturday after receiving permission from UNH
athletic director Judith Ray.

In his 10 years in Durham, Umile has posted nine 20-victory seasons and
led the Wildcats to seven NCAA tournament appearances, including an
overtime loss to Maine in last year's championship game. He also is a
three-time Hockey East coach of the year selection. UNH was 23-9-6 this
season.
