Dan Shermerhorn's Tacoma Sabercats lost in the Taylor Cup finals (WCHL)

For those who don't have web access, Dan had 45 goals and 69 assists
for 114 points in 54 games, which led the Sabercats.  Shermerhorn was
named by his team as Rookie of the Year and was voted by the WCHL as
the Most Valuable Player (see release below).
 
In the playoffs he posted 11 goals and 7 assists for 18 points in 11
games.

 BOISE, Idaho, Mar. 31 - The West Coast Hockey League today announced
that Tacoma Sabercats center Dan Shermerhorn
 has been selected as the 1997-98 WCHL Most Valuable Player in voting
by the league's general managers and head coaches.
 Shermerhorn joins San Diego Gulls left wing Martin St. Amour (1996-97)
and Fresno's Fighting Falcons head coach Guy
 Gadowsky (1995-96) as players to receive the honor.
 
 In his first professional hockey season, Shermerhorn appeared in 54
games and finished third in the WCHL scoring race with 114
 points on 45 goals (fourth in the WCHL) and 69 assists (third in the
WCHL). In addition to leading the Sabercats in both points
 and assists, the former University of Maine star was tied with
teammate Kim Maier for the club's top plus-minus rating at +23.
 During the 1997-98 regular season, Tacoma had a record of 36-15-3 for
a .694 winning percentage with Shermerhorn in their
 lineup versus a mark of 6-4-0 (.600) when he did not play.
 
 In recognition of his outstanding performance with the Sabercats,
Shermerhorn received five recalls to Tacoma's International
 Hockey League (IHL) affiliate - the Las Vegas Thunder - and appeared
in 17 games with the IHL club.
 
 During the 1996-97 season, Shermerhorn helped lead the University of
Maine Black Bears to a third-place regular season finish
 in Hockey East. In 35 games played, he tallied 29 points on 16 goals
and 13 assists. During the 1995 National Collegiate Athletic
 Association (NCAA) Championships, he scored the game-winning goal in
triple overtime to help Maine defeat the University of
 Michigan and advance to the national championship game against Boston
University. Shermerhorn's goal ended the longest game
 in NCAA history.
