PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated the Maine
Black
Bears, 6-2, on Friday, Dec. 5 in HOCKEY EAST action at PC's Schneider
Arena.
Providence College got on the board first when freshman Heath Gordon
took a
pass from behind the net and slipped a low shot past a sprawled Maine
netminder Bryan Masotta at 11:55 of the first. The Friars struck again
with
1:30 remaining in the first period as junior Jon Cameron blocked a shot
from
the point and scored in a short-handed situation after taking the puck
the
length of the ice.
Maine junior Bobby Stewart tallied the only goal of the second period
when
he one-timed a shot past Friar goaltender Boyd Ballard at the 2:49 mark.
The Friar offense came to life in third period as PC got four goals in
the
final 20 minutes of play. Sophomore Jerry Keefe scored what proved to
be
the game winner as he poked home a rebound at 3:45 of the third. Junior
Troy Lake, sophomore Fernando Pisani and sophomore Nick Lent each added
a
goal in the third. Sophomore Ben Guite netted Maine's second goal on a
power-play situation at the 17:01 mark of the third.
Ballard made 33 stops in net and earned the game's No. 2 star for the
Friars. Masotta recorded 19 saves in the loss.
With the win PC improved to 9-3-1 overall and 4-3 in HOCKEY EAST while
Maine fell to 7-6-1 and 4-4-0 in league play.
Providence College will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 6 against
Maine
at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
