*DOYLE NAMED TO CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA TEAM*
ORONO, Maine– University of Maine men’s ice hockey goalie Frank Doyle
(Guelph, Ontario) has been named to the 2003-04 CoSIDA Academic
All-America At-Large First Team. The Men’s At-Large program for the
Academic All-America program includes the sports of fencing, golf,
gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, volleyball, water
polo and wrestling.
Doyle was 19-4-0 in goal for the Black Bears, recording a 1.81 goals
against average that was fourth in the nation. His win percentage (.826)
was first in the nation and he posted five shutouts. He graduated in May
with a cumulative GPA of 3.85 in business administration. Doyle was
named recipient of the M Club Dean Smith Award earlier this year as the
top male student-athlete at Maine. He was also named to the Hockey East
All-Academic Team at goalie for the second straight season.
This marks the second straight year a men’s ice hockey player from Maine
has been named to the Academic All-America At-Large team, joining
forward Martin Kariya. Doyle was the only ice hockey player to be named
to the First Team. Maine was the only Hockey East or America East school
to have a student-athlete named to the Men’s Academic All-America
At-Large team this year.
To qualify for the CoSIDA Academic All-District program, a
student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in class, a starter or
significant reserve on his team and compiled a minimum 3.20 cumulative
GPA. The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female
student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the
playing field and in the classroom.
