UMaine Women’s Ice Hockey Receives Two More Commitments

ORONO, MAINE- Amy Rodgers (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/Dartmouth) and Karine
Senecal (LaSalle, Quebec/College Jean-de-Brebeuf) have signed National
Letters of Intent for the University of Maine, announced Black Bear
head coach Rick Filighera. The duo join Morgan Janusc (Dundas,
Ontario/North York Aeros), Vicky Johnstone (St. Laurent,
Quebec/Hotchkiss Prep School (Conn.)), and Alanna Pfeffer (Farmington
Hills, Mich./Honeybaked Hockey Club) who signed earlier this year. All
five players join the UMaine program in the fall.

Rodgers is a 5-foot-8 goalie who posted a 2.35 GAA and a .925 save
percentage for the boys hockey team at Dartmouth High School. The only
female to play boys high school hockey in Nova Scotia, she also
competed in soccer and basketball at Dartmouth. Rodgers is bilingual in
French and English and graduated with Honors in the Spring of 2002. In
2000 she was the Brightwood Golf Club Junior girls champion. “Amy is an
all-around athlete,” said Filighera. “She is a positional goalie that
plays with poise and makes most of her saves under control. Amy’s
experience as a starter her senior year will help her make the
transition to Division I women’s hockey with no problem.”

Senecal is a 5-4 defenseman/forward who was the captain of the cejep
team that finished fourth this past season. “Karine is a very
passionate player who can play both forward and defense,” said
Filighera. “I think Karine is a leader who will help build our team
chemistry and will do her best to fill whatever role she is asked to
do.”

In 176 games, Senecal scored 20 goals and doled out 68 assists for 88
points. She was a first team All-Star and a member of team Quebec, the
provincial champions in 1999.

The Black Bears were 16-15-4 last season with an 8-10-3 mark in the
ECAC East. Filighera’s team competed in the ECAC playoffs for the first
time. Other season highlights included a win over nationally-ranked New
Hampshire and an overtime victory vs. number two Northeastern. The
Black Bears return eight of their top nine scorers from last season and
two of three goaltenders. UMaine also gains the services of senior
Raffi Wolf (Voerde, Germany/Gesamtschule am Lauerhaas) who spent last
season competing with the Germany Olympic team.

All NLI signees are contingent on admission to the University and NCAA
rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
