Blair, Grady Named Assistant Ice Hockey Coaches at UMaine

ORONO, Maine- University of Maine head ice hockey coach Tim Whitehead
has announced the hiring of two assistant coaches. Campbell Blair, who
was hired on an interim basis during 2001–02, will be retained on a
permanent basis. Whitehead also announced that he has added Brian
Grady, who will serve as a volunteer assistant.

Blair, a 1991 graduate of the University of Maine, worked extensively
with the Black Bear defense which allowed just 2.64 goals per game
during the 2001–02 campaign. He helped lead Maine to the National
Championship game and a record of 26-11-7.

“We are very excited that Campbell was able to join our team last
November,” said head coach Tim Whitehead. “He was a big reason why our
defensive corps improved last season. Campbell did a terrific job and
hiring him back for next season was an easy decision.”

Prior to returning to the University of Maine, Blair was head coach and
general manager of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League’s Victoria
Salsa. While with Victoria, Blair logged a record of 105-73-16 to
become the winningest coach in Salsa history. He led Victoria to one
Island Division, one Coast Division and one British Columbia Hockey
League Championship and was named the 1999–2000 Coastal Conference
Coach of the Year. Blair coached current UMaine assistant captain
Martin Kariya while with the Salsa.

Blair played two seasons as a defenseman at UMaine (1988–89, 1989–90)
and was an undergraduate assistant coach for the Black Bears. He
coached with current Black Bear head coach Tim Whitehead and assistant
coach Grant Standbrook during the 1990–91 season in which UMaine
advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four and amassed a record of 32-9-2.

Brian Grady will serve as a volunteer assistant for the Black Bears in
2002–03. A 2000 graduate of Hamilton College, Grady was a four-year
member of the ice hockey team and served as team captain his senior
season. He was named to the All-NESCAC first team his senior season. He
was also selected to play in the Division III East-West Senior Ice
Hockey All-Star game. Grady was also a four year member and captain of
the baseball team at Hamilton, where he also earned All-NESCAC first
team honors his senior season. “I feel very fortunate to have Brian on
our staff for the next two years,” said head coach Tim Whitehead.
“Brian is an excellent young teacher and coach who will make an
immediate positive impact with our players.”

Since graduation, Grady has taught history and coached with the varsity
and junior varsity ice hockey programs at The Salisbury School, a prep
school in Salisbury, Conn. He has also coached at the Hamilton College
Hockey School and the Northeast Hockey Clinic.
