Kariya Earns District Academic All-America Honors

University of Maine junior forward Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, British
Columbia) was selected to the Verizon Academic All-District I First Team as
selected by the College Sports Informations Directors of America. Kariya is
a mathematics major with a 3.75 GPA, and will now be placed on the national
ballot. It is the second year that Kariya has earned All-District I honors.

Kariya was assistant captain for the Black Bears and helped lead Maine to
the National Championship game. He was named co-winner of the Dean Smith
award presented annually to the top scholar-athlete. UMaine finished the
2001-02 campaign with a record of 26-11-7 and lost to Minnesota in overtime
in the National Championship game.

Kariya finished fourth on the team in scoring with 16 goals and 28 assists
for 44 points in 43 games. He finished tied for third in Hockey East in
scoring with nine goals and 21 assists for 30 points in league games. Kariya
was named Hockey East Player of the Week on January 7 after scoring four
goals and adding an assist in 5-4 comeback win over Providence.

Kariya is UMaine's fourth Verizon/CoSIDA District selection this year. He
joins softball players Leigh Ann Hlywak and Rachel Bain, who were honored
last week and swimmer Kate Abbott who was honored earlier today.
