From the television coverage (such that it was), it looks like Metcalf just
snapped and reached his stick out and actually played the puck from the
bench with his stick.

The ref must have been confused (also, not surprising) as to what to call.
He settled on interference, but it could have been too many men, or
something else.

After the game, Metcalf was very hard on himself saying he cost the team the
win.  As the article on USCHO notes, that is tough assessment because it was
3-1 bad guys at the time.
