MAINE DEFEATS MINNESOTA IN OVERTIME, 5-4

WORCESTER, Mass. - Robert Liscak's shot past out-of-position Minnesota
goalie Adam Hauser with 6:56 left in overtime lifted the University of
Maine to a 5-4 victory over the Golden Gophers, in the first round of the
NCAA East Regional on Friday night at the Centrum Centre in Worcester,
Mass.

UMaine (20-11-7), who remains unbeaten (5-0) in NCAA tournament games
played in Worcester, now advance to the second round and play Boston
College on Saturday, March 24, at 8:30 p.m.

Liscak spun and scored the game-winning tally into a virtually wide-open
Minnesota net, after Hauser played a shot from Todd Jackson right at
Liscak.

"He (Adam Hauser) wanted to play the puck and he did," said Liscak, "and
he played it right onto my stick. All I had to do was put it into the
empty net."

"All I was thinking was 'don't miss the net again.' It was happening so
quickly, I had no time to react - I just put it in the back of the net,"
said Liscak.

Liscak's overtime heroics were set-up by Michael Schutte's power-play goal
with 2.7 seconds left in regulation. Martin Kariya, who had the puck with
Hauser down on the ice, opted to pass to Niko Dimitrakos instead of
shooting. Dimitrakos tipped the puck over to Schutte, who beat Hauser to
the short side of the Minnesota net. The Black Bears were handed the power
play opportunity when Minnesota's Paul Martin was called for slashing with
58.4 seconds remaining in the game.

"This is the fourth time in a month-and-a-half that we have come from
behind in the third period to tie a game and win it in overtime," said
UMaine Head Coach Shawn Walsh. "This team has started to look like a team
of destiny."

The Black Bears were sent reeling defensively early in the first period by
a flurry of Golden Gopher scoring opportunities in the first five minutes.
UMaine goalie Matt Yeats succesfully turned aside all of these, including
a breakaway shot by Minnesota's Erik Wendell a little past the three
minute mark, that Yeats deflected over his right shoulder.

Yeats was challenged on plenty of other occasions, thanks largely to
UMaine's inability to clear the defensive zone and Minnesota's control of
the draws throughout the period. As a result, the Black Bears were
outgunned 14-7 in shots on goal in the first period alone.

The Golden Gophers scored their first goal of the game off a combination
of the two. The nation's second ranked power play unit scored just nine
seconds into its first opportunity, when Jordan Leopold controlled the
puck off a faceoff and fed it to Erik Westrum who fired at Yeats from 10
feet out. Yeats made the initial stop, but Minnesota's Johnny Pohl banged
away at the loose puck and pushed it beneath Yeats' pads to score at the
7:50 mark.

Minnesota's Troy Riddle tried to convert yet another breakaway attempt off
a turnover at the 13 minute mark, but Yeats deflected the shot into the
corner to his left.

The Black Bears knotted the game at 1-1 with just 5.6 seconds remaining on
the clock in the first period. Todd Jackson took a pass just inside the
Minnesota blue line from Liscak, skated around a Golden Gopher defender,
and beat Hauser on a shot low toward the right post.

While the Golden Gophers may have controlled play in the first period, the
Black Bears had their way through most of the second. UMaine outshot
Minnesota 7-1 during the first seven-and-a-half minutes of the second
period, including one off the post.

However it was another UMaine turnover that allowed Minnesota to
temporarily take the lead. Westrum picked up a Matthias Trattnig turnover
just inside the Black Bear blue line, and let loose a blast that was
deflected past Yeats at the 8:44 mark by Grant Potulny, who was standing
approximately ten feet out and just to the right of the UMaine goal.

The Black Bears came back to tie the game at 2-2 barely two minutes later.
Dan Kerluke skated into the Minnesota zone, weaved through the Golden
Gopher defense, and pushed the puck just past the top of the crease to
Lucas Lawson, who was sailing in on the far side. Lawson one-timed the
puck and beat Hauser high on his glove side at the 10:40 mark.

Yeats made a spectacular save to turn aside a Golden Gopher go-ahead
effort with just under four minutes to play in the period. Minnesota's Jon
Waibel skated in on a shorthanded breakaway, only to be denide by the
outstretched Yeats.

The Black Bears took their first lead of the game on Doug Janik's
power-play goal at the 2:58 mark of the third period. Janik, who hit the
post in the first period, saw this blast from the right point catch
Hauser's equipment before rattling around in the Gopher net.

The Minnesota power play unit capitalized on a slashing penalty to Janik
by tying the game up at 3-3 at 7:02 in the third period, on Potulny's
tip-in of a shot by Leopold from the top of the face off circle inside the
Black Bear zone.

The Golden Gophers took the lead when Westrum batted down a high shot by
Martin, and deflected it past the glove of Yeats. Martin's shot came off
the rebound of a blast by Pohl; Yeats got turned around looking for the
puck and couldn't locate it before Martin got away his blast.

Yeats prevented Minnesota's one-goal lead late in the third period from
becoming ever larger with a pair of saves in one-on-one opportunities for
the Gophers. Yeats first gloved a shot by Pohl around the nine minute
mark, then stonewalled Nick Angell barely a minute later by smothering
Angell's shot in his chest protector.
