Maine defeats Providence, 6-1
 
        ORONO, Maine. -- The Maine Black Bears defeated the Providence College
Friars, 6-1, in HOCKEY EAST action at Maine's Alfond Arena on Friday,
Nov. 20.
        Maine got on the scoreboard first when David Cullen intercepted a pass
at
center ice and skated the puck into the PC zone where he sent a pass to
Marcus Gustaafsson who one timed a shot past PC netminder Boyd Ballard
at
1:16 of the first period.  The Friars tallied the equalizer on their
first
power-play of the game as Jerry Keefe picked up the rebound of Jason
Ialongo's blast from the right point at 4:31 of the first period.
        Maine took a 2-1 lead at 4:05 of the second period when Josh MacNevin
turned the puck over in the defensive end on the powerplay and Brendan
Walsh
rifled a wrist shot from the face-off circle past Ballard for a
short-handed
tally.  The Black Bears increased their lead as Walsh slid a low shot
under
Ballard on the power play at the 6:21 mark of the second period.  Walsh
completed his hat trick in the second period when he broke in around
the PC
defense and slipped a shot past Ballard at the 11:04 mark.  PC
goaltender
Mark Kane replaced Ballard after Walsh's third goal of the period at
11:04.
        Steve Kariya notched his sixth goal of the year at 4:18 of the third
period
to give Maine a 5-1 lead.  Marcus Gustaffson added the final goal for
Maine
on a power play at 17:55 of the third.
        Michaud registered 24 saves in the win for Maine.  Ballard and Kane
combined to stop 17 shots for the Friars.
        With the win, Maine raised its record to 6-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in
HOCKEY
EAST play, while Providence fell to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in league play.
        Providence returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 21 against Maine at
Alfond
Arena at 7:00 p.m.
