In one of his books he has a long passage praising (Louis?) Agassiz, who
denied evolution. At the dedication of a memorial to Agassiz (I think
set in concrete to give point to the wisecrack) the president of
Stanforrd remarked that Agassiz was always better in the concrete than
in the abstract.
