I can't help but make an observation about the recent appointment of a
male to coach a female hockey team at UMaine. The question I ask is why?
Are there not enough well-trained female coaches who deserve this chance to
show leadership at UMaine? Is this not another example of the oppression
of women in sports? Who comprised the selection committee? Were they
mostly women with hockey backgrounds? I have two boys who play hockey and
a daughter with a Master's degree in Sports Administration and it seems to
me that this would have been an excellent time to demonstrate gender equity
in coaching hockey at UMaine along the lines of the Black Bear women's
basketball varsity team. I was looking forward to the naming of a woman
because I believe that women may react differently to men than to women
coaches in terms of learning and acting.

Comments anyone?
