4.) Boston U. continues Beanpot dominance over BC (Boston U.)
By Andy Matthews
The Daily Free Press (Boston U.)
02/02/1999

BOSTON, Mass. -- It must seem unfair to Boston College.

For years, the Eagles have been on the short end of college hockey's
fiercest rivalry.

Heading into Monday night's opening game of the 47th annual Beanpot
Tournament, the Eagles had lost 10 straight games to the Terriers in the
tourney, their last win coming Feb. 2, 1981, in a 5-2 first-round
victory.

Monday night figured to offer a change, as BC went in nationally ranked
while Boston University was mired in its worst slump in over a decade.

Same tournament, same result.

Sophomore forward Russ Bartlett's overtime goal gave the Terriers a 3-2
upset win and left the Eagles with that all-too-familiar feeling that
comes
with watching your arch enemy celebrate.

"There's a reason we've had a lot of success in this tournament," BU
coach
Jack Parker said. "It was hard work. It was determination. It was
courage."

Success is pouring from the numbers:

* BU has now won 11 straight Beanpot games against BC and is 21-8
against
its rival overall in the tournament.

* The Terriers have won 13 of 16 first-round games against the Eagles.

* Next Monday night, BU will look to add its 22nd Beanpot championship.
The
Terriers' 21 is more than any of the other four teams.

* Monday night's win was BU's 10th in a row in Beanpot action, as its
last
loss in the tournament came Feb. 7, 1994 when it lost 4-2 to Harvard
University in the first round.

* Parker is now 14-2 lifetime against BC in the Beanpot.

* BU has advanced to the finals in 15 of the last 16 Beanpots.

TWO TO TANGO

The Terriers fell victim twice Monday night to BC's deadly combination
of
junior defenseman Mike Mottau and junior forward Jeff Farkas.

On BC's first goal, Mottau faked a slap shot from the left point that
prompted BU forward Chris Heron to drop to the ice to block it.

Mottau then went around Heron and found Farkas at the right side for a
power-play goal at 11:35 of the first.

Mottau's lethal slap shot from the point created BC's second goal, as he
unleashed a bullet that was first stopped by BU goalie Michel Larocque
but
then fell in front of the goalie.

BC forward Chris Masters' rebound attempt was also stopped, but Farkas
was
in perfect position to bang home the rebound at 5:29 of the second
period.

Mottau, one of the best two-way players in the nation, was also
tremendous
Monday night at keeping the puck in BC's offensive zone when it was
kicked
out toward the blue line.

FAMILIAR FRIENDS

Travis Roy was in the Terriers' locker room before Monday night's game
to
offer some words of encouragement in the midst of this letdown season.

"He just talked about how he felt for us," BU captain Albie O'Connell
said.
"How we're going through a tough time and this is a perfect time to put
things in order. It was real good for the guys to hear. I'm glad he said
it, and he's probably glad he said it."

Also on hand were former Terrier captains Chris Drury and Chris
Kelleher,
who talked with some BU players before the game.

HALL OF BEANS

The Beanpot Hall of Fame has added Bill Hogan, Rick Meagher and Cooney
Weiland, bringing its membership to 25.

Hogan led BC to Beanpot crowns in 1961 and 1963 and was voted Most
Valuable
Player of the '63 tournament.

Meagher, the only three-time All-American in BU history, was a member of
the Terriers' 1975 Beanpot championship team. Weiland coached Harvard to
five Beanpot titles in his 21 years behind the bench.
