No. 14 Providence DEFEATED BY UMASS AMHERST, 4-3
PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The 14th-ranked Providence College men's hockey team was
defeated by UMass Amherst, 4-3, in a HOCKEY EAST conference game. The
Minutemen's Brad Nizwantowski scored the game winner 5:07 into the third
period to propel UMass to the win.
In the first period, UMass's (2-2-0 overall/1-0-0 HE) Craig MacDonald got
the scoring started with an unassisted goal off a Providence turnover deep
in the PC defensive zone. The Friars (1-4-0 overall/0-2-0 HE) tied the
contest at the 7:57 mark when junior Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) tipped in
a blast from teammate Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.) from the blueline
for a power-play goal. It was Providence's third power-play goal of the season.
The Friars took the lead at 12:34 when sophomore John Luszcz (Ludlow,
Mass.) knocked a lose puck into the goal to put the Friars up, 2-1.
Sophomores Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) and Regan Kelly (Imperial, Sask.)
assisted on the score. UMass tied the contest at 2-2 when Tim Turner evened
the score on a power-play goal at the 16:13 mark of the period.
In the second period the Minutemen took a 3-2 lead when Jimmy Callahan put
his team ahead, beating PC goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.)
for the score.
The third period started with a Providence penalty just 35 seconds into the
period. Omicioli evened the score for the Friars when he collected a Jeff
Mason (Easthampton, Mass.) clear and raced into the UMass end and fired a
slapshot over the left shoulder of Minuteman goaltender Mike Johnson. The
short-handed goal tied the contest at 3-3, but four minutes later,
Nizwantowski put UMass up for good.
Schaefer recorded 26 saves in the loss while logging 59:17. Johnson made 20
saves in the win for the Minutemen.
The Friars return to the ice when they host the Minutemen on Friday,
November 2 at 7:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
