RONAN, SHIELDS LEAD MAINE PAST UMASS AMHERST 7-1
ORONO, Maine -- John Ronan (Braintree, Mass.) scored a goal and added two
assists while Colin Shields (Glasgow, Scotland) tallied two goals as the
University of Maine ice hockey team defeated UMass Amherst 7-1 Friday night
in Hockey East action at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Maine improves to
18-9-6, 12-5-4 in Hockey East play while UMass falls to 8-21-2, 3-16-2 in
conference play. With the win, Maine is guaranteed home ice in the first
round of the Hockey East playoffs.
The Black Bears opened the scoring at 6:14 when Ronan and Paul Falco
(Weymouth, Mass.) passed the puck back and forth several times before Ronan
beat UMass netminder Tim Warner (Waltham, Mass.). The Minutemen came right
back as Peter Trovato (North Attleboro, Mass.) tied the game at 6:30 from
Greg Maulden (Holliston, Mass.) Peter Metcalf (Pembroke, Mass) scored the
game-winning goal at 14:05 when the Minutemen tried to clear the puck and
Metcalf picked off the clearing pass and rifled it past Warner. Shields
scored his 21st goal of the season at 18:51 to give Maine a 3-1 lead headed
into the first intermission.
Ben Murphy (North Andover, Mass.) netted his fourth goal of the season at
9:45 of the second period from Ronan and Falco as the Black Bears grabbed a
4-1 lead. Lucas Lawson (Braeside, Ontario) scored his 10th goal of the
season when Francis Nault (Tracy, Quebec) found Niko Dimitrakos (Somerville,
Mass.) who made a perfect pass to Lawson. Lawson skated in alone on Warner
and found the back of the net.
Shields scored his second of the night when Tom Reimann (Blaine, Minn.)
found him all alone at the UMass blueline. Shields broke in alone on UMass
netminder Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) who replaced Warner at the start
of the third period. Shields found the back of the net for his team-leading
22nd goal of the season. Ronan added his second at 18:44 from Murphy and
Metcalf.
Michael Schutte (Burlington, Ontario), Falco and Nault all dished out two
assists on the night. Seven Black Bears registered at least two points on
the evening for Maine, who outshot UMass 38-24. There were just three
penalties called in the entire game, two on UMass and one on Maine.
UMaine netminder Mike Morrison (Medford, Mass.) started in net for Maine and
made 12 saves in 40 minutes of action while Matt Yeats (Innisfail, Alberta)
stopped all 11 shots that he faced in the final 20 minutes of play. Morrison
picked up the win and improves to 15-3-4 on the season. Warner made 22 saves
in the first 40 minutes of action for the Minutemen and falls to 1-6-0 on
the season. Johnson stopped nine third period shots for UMass.
Maine and UMass Amherst will meet for the third and final time in the
regular season on Saturday, February 23 at 7:00 at Alfond Arena in Orono,
Maine.
