MAINE BLANKS UMASS AMHERST 7-0
ORONO, Maine -- Peter Metcalf (Pembroke, Mass.) scored a goal and added two
assists to lead the University of Maine ice hockey team to a 7-0 victory
over UMass Amherst Saturday night at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Maine,
who scored seven goals for the second straight night, improves to 19-9-6,
13-5-4 in Hockey East action while UMass Amherst falls to 8-22-2, 3-17-2 in
conference play.
Francis Nault (Tracy, Quebec) opened the scoring for Maine at 10:31 when
Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, British Columbia) made a pass to Lucas
Lawson (Braeside, Ontario) who found Nault. Lawson made it 2-0 with his 11th
goal of the season from Niko Dimitrakos (Someville, Mass.) and Kariya at
17:14. For Lawson, it is his fourth straight game with a goal. Gray
Shaneberger (Sewell, N.J.) added to the Maine lead when he knocked in a
rebound off a Robert Liscak (Skalica, Slovakia) shot at 9:01 of the second
period.
The UMaine freshman class continued to look impressive as Ben Murphy (North
Andover, Mass.) scored his fifth goal of the season at 11:32 from Paul Falco
(Weymouth, Mass.) and Metcalf. Falco netted his second goal of the campaign
halfway through the third period when he knocked the puck away from a UMass
defender and rifled a shot past Minutemen netminder Mike Johnson (Excelsior,
Minn.) at 9:34. Metcalf gave the Black Bears a 6-0 lead at 11:51 with his
seventh goal of the season from Liscak and Todd Jackson (Cortland, N.Y.).
The Black Bears closed out the scoring at 14:08 when Colin Shields (Glasgow,
Scotland) scored on the power play from Jackson and Tom Reimann (Blaine,
Minn.). For Shields, it was his 23rd goal of the season and 10th on the
power play.
Mike Morrison (Medford, Mass.) stopped eight shots in 40 minutes of play and
improves to 16-3-4 on the campaign. Matt Yeats (Innisfail, Alberta) made
four saves in the final 20 minutes of action. UMass goaltender Mike Johnson
stopped 32 shots in net and falls to 7-16-2 on the year.
After the game, Maine recognized its four seniors, Matt Yeats, Peter
Metcalf, Niko Dimitrakos and Mike Morrison. All four were instrumental in
the victory on Saturday night as Metcalf and Dimitrakos tallied a goal and
three assists while the two senior netminders combined for the shutout. It
is the second straight weekend that Maine has record a shutout.
Maine outshot UMass 39-12 in the tilt. Twelve of the 18 players for Maine
registered at least one point on the evening, while juniors Cliff Loya
(Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Liscak both played in their 100th career game on
Saturday night.
The Black Bears return to action on Friday, March 1, when they travel to
Boston University for a college hockey showdown. The Terriers sit just two
points in front of the Black Bears, who in addition to UNH, are all vying
for the Hockey East regular season crown. UMass will host New Hampshire on
Tuesday, February 26 for a 7:00 p.m. tilt.
