Women's Hockey Falls to Niagara, 6-4

Niagara University, NY (November 17, 2001)--- The Niagara women's
hockey team survived their first game against Maine this weekend,
edging the Black Bears, 6-4. The game appeared to be well in hand for
the Purple Eagles, but as things go, looks can be deceiving.

Valerie Hall (Niagara Falls, ONT) scored first for Niagara half way
through the first period. She received a pass from center in the
defensive zone off the stick of Teresa Marchese-Del Monte (Brampton,
ONT). Just outside the left of the goal Hall beat Maine goaltender Dawn
Froats top-shelf for her seventh goal of the season. Niagara was unable
to connect on any other shots as the first period came to a close with
Niagara out shooting Maine 11-4, and the 1-0 lead.

Freshman, Candice Moxley (Markham, ONT) had the hot hand in the second
period as she scored back-to-back goals for Niagara. Her first came
just under a minute into the period when she fired a shot off a pass
from Hall past Froats to extend Niagara's lead. Moxley added her third
goal of the season three minutes later when she received a centering
pass from Candice Ceelen (Milton, ONT) to give the Purple Eagles the
3-0 advantage. Hall added a power play goal and Lindsay Vine (Kirkland
Lake, ONT) scored short handed to round out the second period scoring
for Niagara and give them the 5-0 lead.

With just over five minutes left in the period the Black Bears started
to show their resilience and clawed their way back into the game. Jarin
Sjorgren got things started for Maine with a power play goal. Niagara's
Amanda Reid (Hamilton, ONT) got a two-minute breather as she was
whistled for a roughing penalty less than two-minutes after Linda Groff
(Amherst, NY) was called for a hooking penalty. With this Maine's
player advantage was extended. Maine's Cheryl White gave her team more
to celebrate going into the second intermission when she snuck a low
shot past Niagara goaltender, Tania Pinelli (Hamilton, ONT) with one
second remaining in the period.

With what appeared to be a comfortable 5-2 lead going into the third
Pinelli was replaced by sophomore goaltender, Jennifer Mascaro (South
Porcupine, ONT) to finish things up for Niagara. Maine obviously had
other ideas as they benefited from Mascaro's inexperience between the
pipes. Maine's lead was cut to two when a mishandled puck by Mascaro
went between her legs and into the back of the net, giving the Black
Bears some life. Rebecca Ouellet was credited with her first goal of
the season on the play. Meagan Aarts cut Niagara's lead to one a minute
later when she fired a blast from center that sailed by Mascaro. With
the Purple Eagles lead in jeopardy Pinelli replaced Mascaro to ensure
this one would not slip away. She kept Maine scoreless for the
remainder of the game, and Del Monte added an insurance goal about
halfway through for Niagara to seal the victory. Brooke Bradburn
(Brampton, ONT) got an assist on the play along with Reid. With the
assist, Bradburn set a milestone in Niagara women's hockey, becoming
the first player in the program's young three-year history to record
100 career points.

Niagara outshot Maine 35-16 as Pinelli recorded 11 saves in the win.
Froats recorded 29 saves for Maine in the loss.

With the win Niagara improved to 8-1 overall, and 5-0 in the ECAC East.
Niagara will face Maine on November 18 for the second of their two-game
series at 2:00 p.m.
