As for the Hart, goaltender Dominik Hasek of the Buffalo Sabres,
newly-retired Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Mario Lemieux and
Anaheim Mighty Ducks winger Paul Kariya are the finalists. Hasek,
considered a leading candidate for the Vezina Trophy as the
league's top goaltender, is hoping to become the first goalie to
win the Hart Trophy since Jacques Plante of Montreal in 1962. It
marks the third time in four years that Hasek is a finalist for
the Hart Trophy. He finished second in 1994 and third in 1995.
Lemieux, who completed a legendary career with the Penguins, is a
three-time winner of the Hart Trophy. Kariya is the first left
wing to become a Hart finalist since 1984.
