MAINE DEFEATS BROWN 3-2

ORONO, MAINE--Dawn Froats (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame Hounds)
recorded 34 saves, including 20 in the final frame, to lead the University
of Maine women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Brown University
Sunday afternoon in ECAC action at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Maine
finishes the season with a record of 15-14-1, 10-13-1 in conference play.
Brown, who was ranked-sixth in the latest USA Today Poll, falls to 18-6-3,
15-6-3 in conference play. The 15 wins are a school record for UMaine.

Karen Droog (Listowel, Ontario/Peel Storm) scored the game-winner, her
22nd goal of the season, just 21 seconds into the third period to give
Maine the 3-2 win. Maine was outshot 20-6 in the final frame, but Froats
preserved the win for the Black Bears with numerous stellar saves.

Brown opened the scoring at 4:50 of the first period when Kathleen Kauth
(Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) scored her 14th goal of the
season on a shot just in front of the Maine net that beat Froats. Maine
tied it at 1-1 when Jarin Sjogren (Bengough, Saskatchewan/Olympic Oval
Program) scored her ninth of the season on a shot just outside the crease
at 13:45. Lauren Steblen (Clayton, N.Y./Jefferson CC) gave Maine a 2-1
lead at 16:04 of the first with her second goal of the season, a slap-shot
from the blue line, that beat Brown netminder Pam Dreyer (Eagle River,
Alaska/Chugiak). Brown scored the lone goal of the second period when
Kauth scored her second of the game, a power play tally at 15:17. The game
remained 2-2 headed into the third period before Droog registered the
game-winner.

Brown outshot Maine 36-32. Froats made 34 saves in net for the Black
Bears, and finishes the season with a record of 12-3-1. The 12 wins ties
her with Amy Oliver for most wins in a season at UMaine. Dreyer stopped 29
UMaine shots and falls to 13-6-2 on the campaign.
