Maine Beats North Dakota 5-1
The University of Maine men's ice hockey team scored four first period
goals while senior netminder Mike Morrison (Medford, Mass.) stopped 46
shots as Maine defeated North Dakota 5-1 Saturday night at the new Ralph
Englestad Arena in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Maine improves to 2-2-0,
0-0-0 in Hockey East while North Dakota falls to 3-2-0, 0-0-0 in WCHA action.
Maine was led by newcomers Colin Shields (Glasgow, Scotland) and Prestin
Ryan (Arcola, Saskatchewan) who scored three of the five goals. Shields
opened the scoring just 3:01 into the first period when he blasted a shot
from the face-off circle. Ryan, playing in his first game as a Black Bear
after sitting over a year for playing in a major junior game, put Maine up
2-0 on his first shot. Robert Liscak (Skalica, Slovakia) tallied the second
short-handed goal of the weekend for Maine when he beat Fighting Sioux
keeper Andy Kollar (Winnipeg, Manitoba). Francis Nault (Tracy, Quebec)
added to the lead at 12:22 with his third of the season.
North Dakota tried to gain some momentum in the second period when Jason
Noterman (Rochester, Minn.) cut the lead to 4-1 but Maine answered back
when Shields scored his second of the game on a hard slap shot. Neither
team was able to find the back of the net in the final frame.
For Maine, it was their first ever win in North Dakota. The Black Bears are
now 4-9-1 against the Fighting Sioux all-time.
Maine netminder Mike Morrison, making his first start of the season, was
outstanding for the Black Bears as he stopped 46 of 47 shots. He improves
to 1-0-0 on the season. Morrison made 23 saves alone in the second period.
North Dakota played three goalkeepers who combined for 14 saves on 19
shots. The Black Bears were also great on the penalty kill as they killed
all seven North Dakota man advantages.
The Black Bears become just the second team to win in the new Ralph
Englestad Arena. The Fighting Sioux were allowed a season-low one goal in
the loss.
Maine returns to action on Friday, October 26, 2001 when it travels to
Western Michigan for an 8:05 p.m. (central time) game.
