    MAINE DEFEATS UMASS LOWELL, 4-1

LOWELL, MA - Freshman Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, BC) scored one goal
and assisted on another as the University of Maine defeated UMass Lowell
Friday
night, 4-1, at the Tsongas Arena in front of 2,213.

The loss increases the River Hawks' winless streak to five games as UML
slips to
8-19-3 overall and 4-13-3 in Hockey East. The Black Bears improve to 18-7-4,
9-7-3 in Hockey East. The two teams meet Saturday night (7:00) to close the
  season series.

Freshman Gray Shaneberger (Sewell, NJ) opened the scoring 18 minutes, 46
seconds into the first period off assists from Kariya and sophomore Peter
Metcalf
(Pembroke, MA/Cushing Academy). Kariya gave the Black Bears a 2-0 cushion
13:36 into the second period as he tucked in a rebound off a shot by junior
Matthias Trattnig (Graz, Austria). Senior Robert Ek (Lulea, Sweden) was also
  credited with an assist.

At 18:07, freshman Robert Liscak (Skalica, Slovakia) put Maine ahead, 3-0, by
way of assists from Ek and senior Cory Larose (Cambellton, New Brunswick).

Sophomore Yorick Treille (Grenobles, France) scored the lone goal for the
River
Hawks 3:26 into the third period, assisted by sophomore Tom Rouleau
(Milwaukee, WI) and senior Chris Bell (Chase, BC).

Senior Jim Leger (Saugus, MA) scored an empty net goal at 18:54. UML outshot
the Black Bears 31-27 as sophomore goalkeeper Jimi St. John (Windsor, ONT)
had 23 saves in his first action since breaking his collarbone in January.
Sophomore Matt Yeats (Innisfail, Alberta) stopped 30 shots from Maine.
