Summary:

It was a huge improvement over last weekends disasters, but Colgate was
too much for Union, and Colgate came out with a 5-2 win. The loss
mathematically eliminated the Dutchmen from the playoffs.

Colgate scored the only goal of the first period, on Raffoul's first
goal of the night. But it was Raffoul's second goal, a shorthanded goal
early in the 2nd Period that was the big one. That goal gave the Red
Raiders a 3-0 lead, all they would need. Union finally did score a few
minutes later, when Jeff Jiamtetti slipped a rebound underneath Colgate
goalie Jason Gates. Colgate took the 3 goal lead again on a 2-on-1 that
completely froze Gallant. Raffoul passed to Richard, who had about 90%
of the net to shoot at with Gallant looking for the shot from Raffoul.
Union's second goal came when they caught Colgate in a line change.
Gallant cleared the puck up to Shane Holunga, who saw Chris Hancock
waiting at the blue line. Holunga's perfect pass sent Hancock in on a
partial break, and he was able to fire the puck past Gates. Colgate
added an empty-net goal with 9 seconds left.

The loss gives the Dutchmen a 2-17 league record, 2-20 overall. Colgate
is now 7-12, 10-15-3. Union has now lost 11 straight, breaking the
school record set in 1980-81. Union's goal at 6:48 of the second period
broke a streak of 155 minutes, 53 seconds without a goal. Opponents
scored 22 unanswered goals during that span.

Before the game, a ceremony was held to present the annual awards.
Junior Jeff Jiampetti won the Charles Morrison Scholarship Award, given
to the student who participates in extra-curricular activities while
demonstrating academic interest and achievement. Junior Steve Battiston
was presented the Thomas Van Arden Dukeheart Award, given to the hockey
player with the highest grade-point average.

Union will play its last home game of the season tonight against
11th place Cornell. Cornell has lost 9 straight since beating the
Dutchmen at Lynah Rink in January. Game time is 7 PM.
