Tigers fall under new spell, slip up at N. Michigan

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Finally, after eight years of trying, the Colorado
College hockey team broke the Lakeview Arena hex.

One night later, the CC Tigers fell under another spell: beginner's
luck.

No magic stick this time. Jason Mitchell, a fresman who hadn't had a
second of college experience, made 47 saves to lead Northern Michigan
past CC, 6-3, Saturday in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game.

"When you have 50 shots on goal, you can't complain about the effort,"
said CC coach Don Lucia.

Given their unfortunate history at the Lakeview Arena, Lucia said his
Tigers weren't terribly heartbroken about leaving the place with a
split. The Tigers' 8-2 win Friday ended a 17-game losing streak in
this building and was only their second win in 23 games here.

Apparently, winning two straight was too much to ask, even if CC did
enter the weekend ranked No.1 nationally.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 13-3 overall, though their 10-2 WCHA mark
is still good for first. They play a pivotal two-game WCHA series at
home next weekend against Minnesota, the nation's No.2 ranked team.

Denver upset the Gophers, 4-3, Saturday night in Minneapolis.

"It's going to be exciting, hopefully we're going to have a jam-packed
rink," Lucia said. "Minnesota is probably going to be the best team
we've seen this year."

Marvelous as the 1994-95 Tigers may be, they do not seem to recover well
from slow starts. They have scored the first goal in all but four games
this year and have lost three of them.

How they fell behind Saturday was a mystery. The Tigers outshot Northern
Michigan, 22-6, in the first period yet trailed where it counted, 2-1.

CC goalie Judd Lambert, who had a WCHA-best 2.08 goals-against-average
and .925 save percentage, had one of those nights. He made just 20 saves.

"We had no problem with the way Judd played," Lucia said. "All the goals
they scored were right on the doorstep. Northern Michigan is a good team.
They've just had problems with their goaltending. Tehy gave an
inexperienced goalie a chance and he played well for them."
