From this morning's Star Tribune in the "Briefly" section of sports section.
The NC$$ has banned Wisconsin hockey coach Jeff Sauer and two players from the
Badgers' next NC$$ tournament game becuase of conduct after this year's
championship.
Assistant Bill Zito, who was involved in a fracas with a referee, was banned
from the next two NC$$ tournaments in any capacity for any institution, the
NC$$ ruled in a report released Wednesday by the University of Wisconsin.
In addition to Sauer, players Blaine Moore and Jason Zent were suspended from
the Badgers' next NC$$ tournament game. "They threw the book at us," Sauer said
from Marco Island, Fla., where he was attending WCHA meetings.
Wisconsin athletic director Pat Richter has appealed the sanctions, which also
order the school to forfeit about $50,000. it would have received for expenses
during the championships at Albany, N.Y. The penalties arose from a fracas at
the end of the penalty-strewn game won 5-3 by Lake Superior State.
The university issued its own sanctions last week, which included a
reprimand for Sauer and regular-season game suspensions for Zent, Moore and
Maco Balcovec. The sanctions also called for Zito to issue a public apology
and repay travel and lodging expenses.
