As of yet, no one has come up with an NC$$ hockey champ with a
sub-.500 record. The MSU championship team of 1965-66 came
close, though. The Spartans finished 9-11 in the WCHA, good for
6th place.
[The WCHA at the time was: CC, DU, Mich, MSU, MTU, Minn,
UM-D (its first year in the "W"), and UND. MTU and NoDak tied
for the regular-season title that year, but Tech won the Mac-
Naughton Cup in the playoffs.]
Anyway, State rattled off 12 wins in its last 16 games and defeated
Clarkson, 6-1 in the NC$$ finals. MSU's final overall record: a
whopping 16-13-0 (.552).
Are there any other schools in this dubious neighborhood?
