NEW HAMPSHIRE DOWNS UMAINE IN BLACK BEARS' HOME OPENER

ORONO, Maine - New Hampshire scored one goal in each period on its way to a
3-1 win over the University of Maine, in women's ice hockey action Friday
night at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.

The Black Bears (2-1-0, 0-1-0) were attempting to extend their
season-opening winning streak to three games, and post the program's
first-ever win over the archrival Wildcats (2-1-0, 1-0-0).

UNH broke the scoreless tie with Allison Edgar's goal with 4:37 remaining
in the first period, and expanded its lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal
by Kristen Thomas just 1:45 into the second period.

Senior LeeAnne Irwin (Freeport, N.Y.) pulled the Black Bears to within one
of New Hampshire with her goal 17:22 into the second period. Sophomores
Meagan Aarts (Watford, Ontario) and Naomi Smethurst (Hay River, Northwest
Territories) were credited with assists on the goal.

The Wildcats' Randi MacMaster put her team back into a two-goal lead when
she beat UMaine goalie Dawn Froats (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan) with 9:29 left
to play in the third period.

Froats made 39 saves in the Black Bear goal, while UNH's Jen Huggon
recorded 17 saves.

The Black Bears and Wildcats will conclude their two-game set on Saturday
at 3 p.m. in Alfond Arena.
