Weekly Release #3

Ryan and Huskies edge ECAC's elite
Clemmensen backstops BC to Maverick Stampede title

WAKEFIELD, MA - Bettering the efforts of the ECAC's best in St. Lawrence
University, the Northeastern Huskies, paced by a third period hat trick by
sophomore Mike Ryan, collected a season-opening 4-3 win Friday at Matthews
Arena. For his efforts, Ryan was named Hockey East Player of the Week. The
Huskies combined to outshoot the Saints 44-13 over the course of the
evening.

In the first full weekend of college hockey action, Hockey East participated
in headline events nationwide. In the Midwest, Boston College needed just
two outings to collect its first tournament win of the new season, defeating
both Notre Dame and host Nebraska-Omaha for the title in the Maverick
Stampede. Senior netminder Scott Clemmensen stopped 61 of 63 shots in the
two games to earn tourney MVP honors and a selection as Hockey East
Defensive Player of the Week.

At the Nissan Classic in Anchorage, AK, Merrimack College was representing
the league well in the school's first meetings with nationally-ranked
programs at Michigan and Michigan State. No. 3 Michigan edged the Warriors
4-2 in Friday's opener, but Merrimack rebounded with an impressive 1-1 tie
against No. 7 MSU on Saturday. Senior goalie Tom Welby made 21 saves in the
draw.

At the University of Vermont, New Hampshire needed two goals in the third
period and one in overtime to defeat the host Catamounts. Matt Swain
provided the comeback climax by deflecting in a Garrett Stafford shot at
2:42 of OT.

In other action, UMass Lowell dominated Connecticut in a 6-1 win. First-year
forward Laurent Meunier was named the league's Rookie of the Week for his
two-goal effort. Maine hosted defending NCAA champ North Dakota for a
two-game set, and collected a hard-fought 1-1 tie in the thrilling opener
before bowing 4-2 in the rematch. Boston University, despite three points
from sophomore Brian Collins, surrendered 5-4 to RPI. It was BU's first loss
at home in 18 games after streaking to a 14-0-3 record at Walter Brown last
year.

HOCKEY EAST NOTES

Boston College: Freshman Chuck Kobasew scored two points in the two games
this weekend, including a power play goal against tourney host
Nebraska-Omaha ... Bobby Allen, Scott Clemmensen, Krys Kolanos, and Mike
Lephart were named to the Maverick Stampede All-Tournament team.

Boston University: BU's loss to RPI ended a 17-game undefeated streak for
the Terriers at home. The Terriers lost their final home game of the 1998-99
season, but cruised to a sterling 14-0-3 record at Walter Brown Arena last
year ... the last time BU bowed in its season opener was in the 1989-90
season, ironically to RPI.

University of Maine: Maine closed last season with an NCAA semifinal loss to
North Dakota, and opened this season with a tie and a loss to UND. Sioux
goalies Karl Goehring and Andy Kollar combined to stop 118 of 121 Black Bear
shots in those games. UMaine outshot the Sioux 91-58 this weekend, but
couldn't best UND goaltending ... Maine ended an impressive streak with
Saturday's loss to North Dakota. The team had not lost a regular season
contest to a non-conference opponent since yielding to Nebraska-Omaha in
February of 1998, a streak spanning 21 games (17-0-4).

UMass Amherst: UMass Amherst did not play over the weekend.

UMass Lowell: Brad Rooney was named team captain, while Chris Gustafson,
Yorick Treille, and Kyle Kidney were selected as alternates ... the River
Hawks' win over UConn increased their lead in the series to 16-5-1.

Merrimack College: The Warriors notched a tie in their first-ever meeting
with Michigan State. Ryan Kiley scored with 11:50 left to play to earn the
draw. Rookie Marco Rosa picked up his first career point with an assist on
the play ... Merrimack also played its first-ever game against Michigan, a
4-2 loss ... Tom Welby was named to the Nissan Classic All-Tournament Team,
stopping 51 of 56 shots.

University of New Hampshire: Darren Haydar continues to roll offensively. He
scored a goal and added an assist in UNH's 5-4 win over Vermont Saturday and
currently leads Hockey East players in overall scoring with seven points in
just three games.

Northeastern University: The newly-formed line of Mike Ryan-Graig
Mischler-Scott Selig has exploded to open the season, combining for nine
goals and nine assists in two games, an exhibition against Toronto and the
regular season opener against St. Lawrence ... in Head Coach Bruce Crowder's
five seasons at Northeastern, the team has won five straight home openers.

Providence College: Providence did not compete over the weekend.
