PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College senior goaltender Boyd
Ballard made 30 saves to lead the Friars to a 5-0 shutout over Miami
University in men's college hockey action on Friday, October 20 at
Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.  The shutout improved the Friar's
record in openers to 31-18-1 as they began the 50th season of Providence
College hockey.
         Sophomore Mike Lucci gave the Friars a 2-0 first period lead with
goals at 2:50 and 12:50.  The Friars took over in the second period as
junior Drew Omicioli opened the scoring with a short-handed blast that beat
Miami netminder David Bowen at the 13:50  mark.  Senior Matt Libby added a
power play goal at 19:58 to give the Friars a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes of
play.  Freshman Cody Loughlean scored the final goal of the game when he
one-timed a pass from Peter Zingoni just 36 seconds into the third period.
         PC's special teams played a significant role in the victory as the
Friars were 11-11 in penalty kill situations,  2-7 on the power play and
notched one short-handed goal.
         For Ballard, it marked his fourth career shutout and first since
December 10, 1999.  Bowen recorded 25 saves in the loss for Miami.
         Providence College will return to action on October 21 versus Lake
Superior State at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
