Thanks, Jay!  I really appreciate your input.  The Chinese character stuff
is what has sort of spurred on my interest in icons and my rudimentary
understanding of semiotics.  Is  "The Chinese Written Character as a Medium
for Poetry" an actual essay I can find somewhere?
