Couldn't agree with Dan more -- the old Alfond was a hellacious place
for an opponent to play. Couldn't hear himself think!
But, to accommodate basketball, the roof was raised -- seating went
from 3700 to 5500+ -- glass around the rink for hockey was raised
anywhere from two to four feet, making it difficult for players to hear
the noise. The 3700 in the lower tier are behind much higher glass now
and they mainly hear themselves. Hockey alumni often talk about what
it was like hearing the noise levels in the old days and how much
quieter it is now, even though there are more people in the place.
So that leaves the noise to the upper tier sections and -- God Bless
'em -- the Maine-iacs and the band in the balcony. What a difference
they made this year!
