Gee -- it's been over 40 years, but I'll try to dig up some of the references. Off
the top of my head I can remember one really wild one -- a critic writing in the
Netherlands who proclaimed that assertions that Pope read Milton must be false,
because only Romantics read Milton. I'll try to look up his name and perhaps a
direct quote. Those notes are buried deep someplace around here.
