HOCKEY TEAM WINS AT FITCHBURG STATE, 3-2

FITCHBURG, MA– Freshman forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) scored twice to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team past host Fitchburg State, 3-2, in a non-conference game at the Wallace Civic Center Wednesday evening.

Hill scored the first two goals of the game. His first, a power play goal at 12:54 of the first period, gave the Corsairs a 1-0 advantage. Freshman defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins) assisted.

Hill’s second goal of the night, after a pass from freshman forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors), made it 2-0 at 3:54 of the second period. The Falcons cut the lead to 2-1 when Matt Arsenault scored with a two-man advantage a minute and 24 seconds later. Billy Pescosolido and Stephen Schofield drew assists.

Junior forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy) restored UMass Dartmouth’s two-goal advantage when he converted a pass from sophomore defenseman Paul Moran (Rockville Centre, NY/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) to make it 3-1 1:44 into the third period. John Goffredo cut the lead to 3-2 on unassisted goal at 7:38 of the third period, but the Corsairs held the Falcons off the remainder of the way.

“We played pretty well, especially the last two minutes of the game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “(Senior defensemen) Jon Finn (Warwick, RI/Boston Harborwolves) and Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) were outstanding on the blue line. It was just a scrappy game.”

The Corsairs, who converted one of two power play opportunities while killing four of five FSC power plays, out shot Fitchburg State, 47-42. UMass Dartmouth junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) made 40 saves, while FSC goalie Devan McConnell made 44 stops.

The Corsairs improved to 4-1 with the victory, while the Falcons dropped to 3-3-1 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Curry Saturday afternoon.
