It may not have been an official anthem, but I've seen sheet music of
"O Canada" as a patriotic song dating back to the first world war (my
great-grandfather was in some Canadian regiment or other). The words
were very different, though; lots of references to God and King.

ObCollegeHockey: Cornell fans sing "O Canada" a capella at away games
when it's not played. I happen to think "O Canada" is appropriate at
hockey games because of the sport's Canadian heritage. (It would also
make sense to play the Star Spangled Banner at baseball games in other
countries if not for the fact that 1. other countries don't go in for
the anthem business and 2. our anthem sucks.)
