On The Docket:  Minnesota State University, Mankato (2-0-0) hosts
Brandon (Manitoba) University in an exhibition game at the Civic Center
on Friday.  The Mavericks and the Bobcats face-off at 7:05 p.m.
 
About the Name Change: In September Mankato State University made a
formal request for a name change to its governing board (Minnesota
State Colleges and Universities).  The board granted the request and on
Sept. 18 MSU's athletic teams began functioning as Minnesota State
University, Mankato.  Although the school will unveil a new logo in the
coming months, at this point there is not a change expected with the
mascot (Mavericks) or school colors (purple & gold).
 
About the Mavericks: MSU earned its first sweep of a Western Collegiate
Hockey Association opponent with 4-3 and 5-2 wins at the University of
Alaska-Anchorage Saturday and Sunday.
 Senior center Rob White paced MSU in Saturday's win with a pair of
goals.  Sophomore forward Jesse Rooney and senior forward Tyler Deis
chipped in with a goal each.  Junior goaltender Brian Nelson earned the
win by turning aside 27 Seawolf shots.
 Junior center Aaron Fox notched his first career hat trick in Sunday's
victory.  Fox tallied a short-handed goal and added power play and even
strength tallies in the second frame.  Sophomore forward Tyler Baines
and sophomore defenseman Ben Christopherson also scored and freshman
goaltender Todd Kelzenberg, who was making his college debut, had 32
saves.  At one point MSU led the Seawolves 4-0 in the game.
 Fox finished the weekend with four points (three goals and an assist)
and Deis had three (one goal and two assists).  The Mavericks converted
on one of seven power play chances and held UAA to one goal on 14
attempts.
 
About the Bobcats:  A member of Canada West University Athletic
Association (CWUAA), Brandon returns 19 letterwinners from last year's
10-17-1 club.
 Brandon stands 4-5-0 on the season and is 0-2 in CWUAA action
following 3-2 and 6-3 losses at the University of Lethbridge this past
weekend.  Second-year forward Craig Malaschuk accounted for four of the
team's five goals in the two games.
        Goaltender Colin Ryder went 10-16-1 in 1997-98, with a 3.95
goals against average.  Senior forwards Craig Anderson (9-23--32) and
Ian Lampshire (11-21--32) are the team's top returning scorers.
        BU is led by head coach Tom Skinner (Manitoba '79).
 
About the Series:  The series between the Mavericks and the Bobcats
stands 1-1.  The two teams met in Mankato during the 1994-95 season
with MSU winning 5-4 and Brandon prevailing 6-5.  Both games were won
in overtime.
 
Broadcasts:  All MSU hockey games are carried live on KYSM AM 1230 with
Mike Kalinowski handling the play-by-play chores.
 Maverick hockey broadcasts can also be heard over the World Wide Web.
Listeners can access the broadcast by visiting the MSU Athletics

Maverick Live Radio icon.  RealAudio software, which is free and

About MSU Head Coach Don Brose:  Head coach Don Brose (Concordia '62)
is in  his 29th year at the MSU men's hockey helm. Brose owns a
499-305-64 career record and his 499 wins ranks 13th all-time and
seventh among active college hockey coaches.  Note:  MSU's game with
Brandon will not count in Brose's career record.
 
MSU Player Notes:  Senior right wing Tyler Deis has tallied 74 goals
and 61 assists for 135 points in 95 career games.  Deis ranks eighth
all-time at MSU in goals, 23rd in assists and 15th in points....Aaron
Fox's hat trick on Sunday was the first by a MSU player since Tim Wolfe
accomplished the feat last year against Union (12/27/97)....Speaking of
Wolfe, the junior forward has now played in 74 consecutive
games...Sophomore forward Tyler Baines, who had two goals and four
assists in 14 games last year, had a goal and an assist in the two
games against UAA....Five players made their intercollegiate debut in
the UAA series - forwards Jon Kerr, Justin Martin and B.J. Anderson,
defenseman Andy Hedlund and goaltender Todd Kelzenberg.
 
Mavericks at Home/Road: MSU went 9-5-2 in games played at their home
rink last year - the 4,832-seat Mankato Civic Center.  MSU owns a
32-14-7 all-time record in the three-year old facility and are 16-5-3
in the last 24 games there.  MSU's average attendance in 16 home
contests last year was 2,991.  Including an exhibition game against the
University of Brandon on Oct. 16, MSU is scheduled to play 17 games in
the Civic Center this year.
 MSU was 6-12-4 in road games last year.
 
MSU Versus WCHA: MSU stands 2-0 in games against Western Collegiate
Hockey Association teams this year.
 The Mavericks were 3-12-2 in games against WCHA members last year.
Included amongst the record were wins over the University of Denver,
Minnesota-Duluth and Alaska-Anchorage and ties with St. Cloud State and
Michigan Tech.
 The Mavericks, who will enter the WCHA as a full-fledged member next
season, plays 13 games against members of the league this year - two
each with Alaska-Anchorage, St. Cloud State, Colorado College,
Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and a single-game with Denver.  MSU
is not playing Minnesota-Duluth or Michigan Tech this season.
 
After Brandon:  MSU hosts Canisius College, a fledgling NCAA Division I
team that is a member of the newly-formed Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference, in a two-game series on Oct. 23 and 24.
