Purple Gold Game Cancelled: MSU head coach Don Brose has announced
taht the team will not play its annual Purple-Gold game. The game was
originally scheduled for Oct. 6.
 
About the Name Change: In September Mankato State University made a formal
request for a name change to its governing board (Minnesota State
Colleges and Universities).  The board granted the request and on Sept.
18 MSU's athletic teams began functioning as Minnesota State
University, Mankato.  Although the school will unveil a new logo in the
coming months, at this point there is not a change expected with the
mascot (Mavericks) or school colors (purple & gold).
 
On The Docket:  Minnesota State University, Mankato opens the 1998-99 season
with a two-game road series at the University of Alaska-Anchorage this
Saturday and Sunday.  The Mavericks and the Seawolves square off at
UAA's Sullivan Arena is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. (CST) and 8:05 p.m.
(CST), respectively.
 
About the Mavericks: MSU went 15-17-6 last year, playing its second season as
a NCAA Division I independent team.  MSU returns 18 players from last year's
team, including ten of the top 12 scorers.
 Senior right wing Tyler Deis (16-20--36) has been MSU's top scorer the
past two years and enters the season ranking 15th on the school's
all-time list for career points (132) and eighth for career goals (73).
Junior center Aaron Fox (14-20--34) ranked second in scoring last year
and has accumulated 67 points in his two seasons with the team.  Junior
right wing Tim Wolfe (17-15--32), who has not missed a game in his two
year at MSU, ranked fourth last year.  Senior center Rob White
(16-12--28) ranked fifth and junior left wing Ryan Schrick (11-15--26)
was sixth.  Members of last year's recruiting class of forwards - Peter
Holoein (5-15--20), T.J. Guidarelli (7-10--17), Jesse Rooney (8-7--15),
Tyler Baines (2-4--6), Ryan Severson (0-3--3) are expected to take on a
more significant role this year in their second season with the program.
 Newcomers up front include red-shirt Jon Kerr and "true" freshmen B.J.
Anderson (North Iowa/USHL), Dwight Hirst (Neepewa/MJHL) and Justin
Martin (Hutchinson (Minn.) HS).
 Sophomore Ben Christopherson (1-19--20), who led MSU blueliners in
scoring as a freshman last year, heads a group of seven returning
defensemen.  Senior Darin Hawn (2-9--13) and juniors Andy Fermoyle
(2-5--7), Todd George (5-13--18),  Jessie Willis (0-7--7) and Matt
Cunningham (0-1--1) are veteran defenders expected to provide
leadership.  Freshmen David Graham (Hill-Murray HS) and Andy Hedlund
(Fargo-Moorhead/USHL) join sophomore Jon Bushy (0-4--4) to round out
the group.
 Junior Brian Nelson (3-3-3, 3.29 GAA, .891 sv%), along with freshmen
Todd Kelzenberg (red-shirt last year) and Eric Pateman (Winkler/MJHL)
are expected to battle for the starting goaltending void created with
the graduation of Des Christopher.
 
About the Seawolves:  A member of the Western Collegiate Hockey
Association, UAA returns 20 letterwinners from last year's 6-25-5 club.
 Senior goaltender Doug Teskey went 6-20-4 in 1997-98, with a 2.93
goals against average and a .895 save percentage.  Senior wing Clayton
Read (9-16--15) and junior wing Rob Douglas (6-8--14) are the team's
top returning scorers.
 A defensive-oriented team, UAA ranked second in theWCHA last year in
goals against average (2.86) and was first in fewest penalty minutes
per game (9.7).
 UAA is led by veteran coach Dean Talafous (UWRF '91), who owns a
15-48-9 record in his two years at the Seawolfe helm. The former
UW-River Falls mentor owns a 125-132-25 career record in his ten
seasons as a college head coach.
 
About the Series:  The Mavericks split a two-game series with the
Seawolves last year, winning 5-2 and losing 1-0 in overtime in games
played in Anchorage.  This weekend's series will mark the 12th and 13th
games between the two schools.  Alaska-Anchorage leads the all-time
series 9-1-1.
 
Broadcasts:  All MSU hockey games are carried live on KYSM AM 1230 with
Mike Kalinowski handling the play-by-play chores.
 Maverick hockey broadcasts can also be heard over the World Wide Web.
Listeners can access the broadcast by visiting the MSU Athletics
website at www.mankato.msus.edu/dept/athletics and selecting the
Maverick Live Radio icon.  RealAudio software, which is free and
available on MSU's site, is needed to download the broadcast.
 
About MSU Head Coach Don Brose:  Head coach Don Brose (Concordia '62)
enters his 29th year at the Mankato State hockey helm. Brose owns a
497-305-64 career record and his 497 wins ranks 13th all-time and
seventh among active college hockey coaches.
 
Mavericks at Home/Road: MSU went 9-5-2 in games played at their home
rink last year - the 4,832-seat Mankato Civic Center.  MSU owns a
32-14-7 all-time record in the three-year old facility and are 16-5-3
in the last 24 games there.  MSU's average attendance in 16 home
contests last year was 2,991.  Including an exhibition game against the
University of Brandon on Oct. 16, MSU is scheduled to play 17 games in
the Civic Center this year.
 MSU was 6-12-4 in road games last year.
 
MSU Versus WCHA: The Mavericks were 3-12-2 in games against WCHA
members last year.  Included amongst the record were wins over the
University of Denver, Minnesota-Duluth and Alaska-Anchorage and ties
with St. Cloud State and Michigan Tech.
 The Mavericks, who will enter the WCHA as a full-fledged member next
season, plays 13 games against members of the league this year - two
each with Alaska-Anchorage, St. Cloud State, Colorado College,
Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and a single-game with Denver.  MSU
is not playing Minnesota-Duluth or Michigan Tech this season.
