Merrimack, Lowell and a few of the ECAC teams (RPI, Union) are
not considered DI schools, but compete in Division I for hockey. Schools
are designated a division by the NCAA. If a team wishes to compete at a
higher division they are allowed to do that though for a few sports. One
of my favorite lines from Hockey East Media Day this afternoon was fromer
Merrimack, and current UMass-Lowell SID Jim Seavey commenting that he has
his first football game to work in seven years on Saturday. Merrimack
might be tabbed for fourth in HE, but you could look all day and not find
a football team anywhere.
While most of the DI schools compete at a DI level for all of
their sports, there are a few (such as UMD and SCSU) that compete at a D2
or D3 level, but have opted to compete at a higher level specifically for
hockey.
While these schools might not have the money or size to compete
across the board with a Wisconsin or Minnesota, they can comcentrate on
one sport (in this case hockey) and do fairly well for themselves.
